In 2022, following extensive negotiations between British, American, and Iranian officials, Morad was granted a three-month furlough from Evin with expectations that he would be released. However, the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman, at the hands of the morality police and subsequent unrest led to Morad being placed under strict house arrest at his in-laws’ apartment.
Seeking solace and creative outlet, Morad requested watercolors and special paper from his wife—a medium he had rarely explored. Despite the chaos of demonstrations and gunfire outside, he found painting to be a calming respite during this uncertain period.
Morad produced several watercolor paintings during this brief but intense period. Each piece reflected his resilience and adaptability, adding a new dimension to his diverse portfolio of prison-born art. When the furlough ended without his anticipated release, Morad returned to Evin, carrying with him the experience of this new form of artistic expression.
