Defiant Persian Lion

2022

This standing lion sculpture, Morad's second work, evolved from designs originally created for his carpet patterns. Also crafted under the constraints of prison conditions, the piece is designed to be assembled and disassembled using removable dowels. The lion's midsection, intentionally left hollow, features seven vertical bars—a poignant representation of Morad and his six imprisoned colleagues. Each bar was painstakingly turned and sanded by hand, a testament to Morad's dedication and resourcefulness. The lion's posture embodies defiance, while its magnificent mane symbolizes renewed strength. However, subtle details in the sculpture hint at the scars of injustice endured. This piece not only showcases Morad's artistic skill and innovative problem-solving but also serves as a powerful metaphor for resilience in the face of adversity. The creation process provided Morad with a therapeutic focus, helping him navigate the challenges of his imprisonment while channeling his energy into a tangible symbol of hope and perseverance.
