Morad Tahbaz's Engravings

View Full Gallery

In 2021, Morad met a fellow prisoner in Block 4 of Evin—a master engraver known for etching religious prayers on carnelian stones for silver rings. Intrigued, Morad asked to learn the craft. The man taught him how to cut, engrave, and polish stones over the course of a year. The prison provided a small room where, between his woodworking projects, Morad spent hours practicing.

Eventually, he was allowed a small electric stone-cutting tool and polishing materials. On visitation days, Morad would discreetly slip his completed works into his wife’s pockets, allowing these miniature masterpieces—symbols of his creativity and resilience—to leave the confines of Evin.
