Gypaetus barbatus, also known as the l"ammergeier," is the national bird of Iran. A stylized version of this bird is depicted on the tail of Iran's national airline. This relative of both vultures and hawks is referred to in Iran as Homa, a bird in Iranian mythology. The lammergeier has a wingspan of over nine feet and can be found in the Alborz and Zagros mountains of Iran, as well as in mountainous regions of Africa, southwestern Europe, Central Asia, and all the way to northeastern China.
